As you look back to the gone by 2020, you can see how the global pandemic did place new rules on our present-day society serving as the catalyst for rethinking everything we have taken for granted, even in the architecture industry. Starting from macro to micro, all these changes are likely to shape our lives for the better in the upcoming years. Although it cannot be predicted what exactly will the remaining 2021 look like yet summarizing the current trends, a series of challenges and opportunities can be overseen which the architects are likely to face while providing their architectural services. Reshaping the Office Buildings Addressing the office buildings reshape is no longer a necessity since most employees are teleworking since the last year. Due to the ill effects of the pandemic, the skyscrapers and office buildings had been deserted in 2020, specifically in the central business districts. This issue has provoked another question - “Are all these buildings yet necessary?” Shifting away from the large city offices is a trend, and the architects have taken to re-evaluate the appropriate needs for the spacious offices. But if these offices are absent then it will be detrimental to the adjacent businesses, particularly to the small businesses. Stores, cafes, and bars will not be able to offer the needed escape. All these trends will make the architects in relocating these buildings and even rethinking the space design. Designing New Domestic Space Due to quarantine, all the part-time workers have to be confined intimately within their homes. When they have to spend such a long time in one place, then an environmental change becomes a necessity. But it is a soul-searching exercise for the architects, specifically for the interior designers. Being confronted with the domestic space limits has now lead the architects to rethink for creating better design spaces befitting the future homes, equipped with flexibility and privacy. In the meantime, the owners will even take it into account while assessing their future homes. Designing the Public Spaces People can only use the private space or else the public space - nothing exists in between. Similar to confronting the limits of their own homes, the architects are even aware of the public spaces' flaws. The bars, restaurants, hotels, and cafés forced to close down during quarantine have started to make up the routine social life. Now social distancing is a new normal and no more a request. So the architects have to think hard about these spaces' safety at the time of COVID, along with the functionality for maintaining social distancing while permitting the people to go outdoors. Reusing and Prefabricating the Modular Constructions - Specifically in the Healthcare Industry As far as the impact of the pandemic on urbanism is showing the small changes can be implemented at a faster rate compared to the zoning plans and new buildings. One ideal example is converting something random into a better temporary hospital. For all the architects, there is a purpose behind every building along with an amazing story of endeavor and spark coupled with perseverance. In the post-COVID-19 world, the most important lesson learned is flexibility. This question is not only about space, but it is about society. The architects have to face challenges and opportunities altogether, which are related to creating greater flexible spaces for leisure and coexistence to realize the importance of change, and to build a new world for the inmates.
